Restaurant S.T.A.Y., Taipei

STAY, a.k.a. Simple Table Alleno Yannick, celebrated its one year anniversary in Taipei last month. It’s situated in the fancy Taipei 101 mall, just below the tallest building in the city.

Apart from Taiwan, STAY can also be found in a few countries like Beijing, Dubai and Beirut. This chain features modern French cuisine, offering four dinner menus plus a truffle menu – all ranging from NTD 2,800, to 9,200. On the side, it’s a little disappointing for a restaurant of this calibre to feature only 8 choices for wines by the glass and a tiny two-page wine list. And they don’t come cheap!

The dinner started with a decent breadbasket. I particularly enjoyed the honey yeast bread. Soup wise, its crustacean bisque was think and flavourful, highlighted with the sweetness of sea urchin. The main course though was a bit of a let-down. The pork’s felt too chewy, and would be better if it came in a smaller portion.

Overall, I appreciate the food and the dinner was pleasant. That said, I still believe it’s not a good showcase of Yannick Alleno’s talent. I’m looking forward to visiting Le Meurice in Paris in the near future.
